SSD is definitely handy bcos you no longer need to bother about standing by or hibernating your laptop when carrying your laptop from places to places for meetings. However, whether it is fast or not, i guess it depends on how much patches and software you installed. Funny thing is, my 1st SSD in my laptop crashed after just 6 months, but on the other hand, i used a few dozens of internal and external HDD for desktop & laptop in the past 10++ yrs and NEVER HAVE ONE crashed at all.... maybe it's just pure luck? :p

a bit expensive. and a bit un-convenient to use external HD with notebook computer.

wait till it becomes affordable to install a 500G SSD to my notebook

You are talking about using SSD in notebook
isn't it worthwhile to use it in desktop as well....?
I'm not sure if it is value-for-money coz i5 or i7 are not expensive comparatively speaking

I think SSD for running C:\ is enough,  For data, we can use external harddisk
