If you recall, I didn't really like the D'Antoni hire from day one, and I think Phil Jackson is a better suit for such a vet team. Since we can't change things now, we can only stick with D'Antoni. The bad thing, it seems to me D'Antoni doesn't know how to utilize guys to fit into his system, or bend his system in ways that any guy can strive in it. Look at Mike Woodsen in New York, he is basically using D'Antoni's offensive system, but changes things within it to fit the Knicks roster. This tells me D'Antoni ain't really as good a coach like everyone or most people think he is.
Are the Lakers in trouble? I think this is a rather the glass is half empty or half full question.
The half empty version goes like this. With a 9-14 record in the loaded west, and the supposedly "easy" part of the schedule behind them, the Lakers are heading for a TON of road games from January onward. And their bench isn't even half decent enough to fill in for both Nash and Gasol while they are out. And in a worst case scenario, Howard can still opt-out of the Lakers this summer, leaving the Lakers with nothing to show for this season, and still don't have the cap room to sign ANYONE half way decent. So yes, the future could be bleak.
The glass half full version goes like this. With so much changes going on, and virtually with OUT Nash the whole season thus far, and Gasol missing the last 7 games, the Lakers are still 9-14! They can only get better when Nash and Gasol both get healthy by near the end of Dec. Don't forget Steve Blake is also out during this time, and that forced Darius Morris to play alot of minutes. This could be a good thing for his experience in the long run. And sure, they lost the last 3 in a row, and 6 out of 7; but I think they are slowly discovering that, they have to play in a slower tempo. Look at yesterday's game at NY. After being down by as much as 26pts, they slowed the game down and somehow found a way to crawl back to make the final scores look respectable. Hopefully as a team they will build on it. We will see.
