I first came across this brand back in 1989. I travelled to Western Australia and tasted this in the Cape Mentelle winery (I believe they share the same owners) in Margaret River. It cost me then AUS$16. This is benchmark Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and was the wine that put New Zealand wines into the world wine map. My flatmate and I used to drink this on our verandah (we shared a house with a Sidney harbour view) on hot weekend afternoons and nibbled on goat/blue/cheddar cheese with crackers. FANTASTIC MATCHES indeed! We could go thru a dozen in 2 week's time. I was in my mid-twenties then, single and carefree. And now I am in my late forties, married with children.
Surely there are now many Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, better in terms of price:quality ratio; but this is my nostalgic wine. Once I was given this in a blind tasting and I picked it out. |
