I agree that the Wi-fi Extender is quite expensive especially when compared with that of a wireless router. I think it's price should go down a bit to make it more competable with the router. But mind you c-hing, cheap things are no good! We have to look at it at a different angle, say, it's quality, stability and durability. Home plugs were also expensive in the first instance, but it's cost had since gone down a bit. In the last 4-5 years, two of my home plugs had been totally written off. Now I learn the trick, instead of running the units 24 hrs daily, I only switch them on when needed. This will prolong the life of the home plugs enormously.
I believe that the transfer rates of the home plug has nothing to do with the new or old standard wires. Home plugs may not be affected by the electricity signals becasue the signals that the home plug transferring are different signals through the wires in our flats. But in our flats, due to the quality of wiring techniques around the rooms, different socket outlets may have different results. Swapping your home plugs to other socket outlets may have solved your problems.
