A Ring Light is probably the hardest light of the three.
Since it is mainly bare bulb, it can cas ...
Beauty Dishes and Soft-Boxes have a completely different kind of effect than a Ring Flash,
Even when placed close to the camera plane. Soft-Boxes give you a relatively uniform light over its surface and you would use that to light someone in a predictable way, with soft even light.
A white beauty Dish does much the same except that it has a block in the middle, this block allows the photographer to avoid common hotspots around the forehead due to the light being too closed to subject. Beauty dishes also gives you the round catchlights in your subject’s eyes, which may be consider more preferable to square catch light for some photographers.
Another kind of Beauty dish that are used often are ones with a silver lining,
They provide a completely different effect than the white counterpart, in that they provide a relatively more snappy light, but still the shadow transitions are very pleasant because it is a large source in relation to the light and distance from subject. A silver Beauty Dish also have another surprise is that they can give you more tiny specula highlights on skin, making it to have a GLOW to it. And if used close enough, the block in the center give the subject’s face a more contoured look than a similar sized softbox at the same distance.
Beauty dishes are great indoors when space is at a minimum, if you ever try to use 3 medium or large Soft-boxes in a tiny hotel room, you will know what I mean. They also work great outdoors when softboxes or Umbrellas behave like Large Sails going with the wind.
The big advantage for the Beauty Dishes with it’s ability to add defectors and Grids is allowing you to control the light fall off on the edges of your subject, One can produce the main highlight on the skin, and have a controlled degree of fall off around the face, arms, body …etc. controlling the shadow and highlights
