老闆就覺得it 冇value囉

其實在於公司的IT equipment 有幾
mission critical.
一部server crash 左，夠經驗既
engineer 可能半個鐘頭內搞番掂
data recover 番，唔夠經驗咪玩幾日囉

你o岩, 但lee d 可以用錢搞得掂嘛,
o依家好多critial server 都行ha(High availability).
死o左會自己failover, user都唔知

You are half right.
A lot depends on how good the system administrator is.
But the another half of the equation depends on
BACKUP and Redundancy.

My first job back in HK many many moons ago:  
Novel Netware 3.11..   running on  486 compatible PC.. Thin coaxial (RG58) cable.
backup on 3.5" floppy disks.

In such a scenairo  it matters very little what sort of system administrator you are.  You cannot work magic!
No money No talk!

No BACKUP. No Data Restore
NO redundancy == too many single point of failure.

A taste of nostalgia
my first network was lantastic 2.x with a 386 30m hd as file server. The others, 3-4 stations were 286. As Mslittle says, really not much to do as back up, particularly with limited resources.

唔係既, 就唔係f.5 學歷都叫做it啦,
咁我讀個degree做乜..........

I'm working in a software company, writing commercial applications.

I found that this industry becoming difficult, since after the Financial Tsunami.... It seems that the traditional economic (manufacturing/trading) of HK had gone!
Now is: real property trading, financial/banking and retials

我親戚部電腦上唔到網(入到window, 開到ie, 但去親都係error page).
我唔知乜事, 但唔想上身, 叫佢搵isp睇下,
isp上黎睇完冇事, 用佢部notebook上到, 咁confirm係電腦有事喇
我同佢隔好遠, 話過幾個星期上黎整, 佢唔等得, 叫樓下電腦鋪d 人上黎,
onsite 先收$300, 睇完唔知, 羅o左部機返去,
兩日後打返黎話整唔到, 要砌過部, 平收$4000

跟住我話, 你羅返部機, 羅黎我屋企, 我睇, 中毒之嘛, 搞o左1個鐘, 搞掂

親戚講反, 佢條友上到黎, 睇唔睇就話要羅走整
又話潮濕, 又唔話要長開冷氣, 乜鬼到講, 差在未講間屋有鬼,
我就知點解有d 話電腦, 點解可以做到騙子咁

見大家咁高興，一陣夜的又講個好爛既It笑話俾大家聽

話說有次朋友攞部腦來upgrade,
咁橋嗰日厠所壞左，叫人來換。
電腦用左千五蚊，水喉佬又咁岩收左千五蚊，
但佢一個鐘頭搞掂，我就差不多三個鐘，
我老婆話：“梗系啦，佢唔洗保留舊屎的野！”
