David Bowie ----- Space Oddity (Single)



1968年夏天，David Bowie 在英國倫敦戲院看了第三遍的科幻電影『2001太空漫遊 2001: A Space Odyssey』後深受啟發寫下 "Space Oddity"，當中 tin can 的段落則是受其當時熱愛的美國民謠二重唱 Simon & Garfunkel 曲風影響。

表面上 "Space Oddity" 是一首以假想太空人 Major Tom 為主角的歌曲，實際上描寫的卻是他與女友 Hermione Farthingale 瀕臨分手的孤寂心境，而雖然 Bowie 從未正式承認角色名字的靈感來源，但極有可能是來自他童年時常見的當紅歌舞劇演員 Tom Major (英國首相 John Major 之父) 廣告海報。

1969年7月11日，"Space Oddity" 首度於廠牌 Mercury Records 發行七吋黑膠單曲，這也是其第二張個人專輯 David Bowie 的開場曲，"Space Oddity" 推出後迅即成為 Bowie 首支打入全英排行榜 Top 5 的暢銷單曲，並因為高度原創性於隔年獲頒艾弗．諾韋洛特別獎 (Ivor Novello Special Award)，走紅程度導致多數人誤會 "Space Oddity" 才是專輯名稱...

由於出版時正好趕上太空任務熱潮，"Space Oddity" 當時還被 BBC 電視台拿來做為九天後美國阿波羅11號登陸月球轉播節目的配樂，不過他們是不是忘了，歌詞裡的 Major Tom 其實是被困在太空艙裡宇宙漂流啊啊啊啊啊...
