On Jan 3, 1984, CHINA CRISIS released the single WISHFUL THINKING.
As the third single from their second album, Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume Two, the track climbed to No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart, marking their only top-10 success at home. Sung by Eddie rather than Gary, who typically handled lead vocals, the song drew inspiration from Brian Eno’s “Here He Comes” from Before and After Science. It quickly established itself as the band’s signature hit, appearing on countless compilations and topping the Swedish Poporama chart later that year.
The song’s 7" and 12" releases each carry different versions of the B-side, “This Occupation,” which remains exclusive to those formats. Another track, “Some People I Know to Lead Fantastic Lives,” features on the 12" version, offering a distinct remix of the number originally heard on the 1982 debut album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain.
It's time we should talk about it
There's no secret kept in here
Forgive me for asking
Now wipe away your tears
And if I wish to stop it all
And if I wish to comfort the fall
It's just wishful thinking
I sat on the roof
And watched the day go by
I see the likeness in his smile and the way he stands
Makes it all worthwhile
And if I wish to stop it all
And if I wish to comfort the fall
It's just wishful thinking
It's time we should talk about is
There's no secret kept in here
I see the likeness in his smile and the way he stands
Makes it all worthwhile
And if I wish to stop it all
And if I wish to comfort the fall
And if I wish to stop it all
And if I wish to comfort the fall
It's just wishful thinking
