Hi all,
Saw a post about KTV in Korea recently and given I have some experience in this area, might as well share with other c-hing. During the summer of 08, I was sent to work in Seoul a lot. Fortunately I still kept in touch with a Korean friend back in my university days and he just happened to be living / working in Seoul now. I knew he’s a dawg and given I was in town solo, perfect!
We went to a place called Giant Bxg Mxn Club in Seoul in the Gangnam area (as a rookie poster, I am not sure if I’m allowed to name names). Little background about Seoul, there is a river called Han River splitting Seoul into the north and south side. Gangnam is located on the south side and it’s relatively new compared to the north side. As a result it is littered with brand name stores, high-end restaurants, fancy apartments and of course, tons of cosmetic surgery clinics. Enough with Seoul 101, here’s the scoop of GBM Club.
Hardware:
I have been lucky enough to check out KTVs in major Asian cities like HK, Macau, Taiwan, China, Singapore and now Seoul and I would say the hardware at GBM is slightly above average. When you go into the room, you will not see any karaoke machine, giant TVs, etc. That’s because you don’t get to sing in the beginning (more on the rundown later). When you walk in, you will see snacks (ex fruits, mini chocolate bars) are placed on the table already. As for drinks, whiskey, beer, water, green tea, etc. The décor is ok and furniture is so so. Not the grandest but ok for me.
Software:
There is no way you can compare the quantity here to Beijing or Macau. For the 3 times I have been to KTV here in Seoul, on average I would get to check out around 8 girls. However, most of them are quite decent. Just in case you guys are wondering, yes, most of girls have been enhanced surgically. I had the luxury to try girls with fake nose, boobs etc. So if you really dislike this kind of chicks, then don’t waste your time and money. For me, it doesn’t matter. I’m not asking for a wife, just a pretty girl with a hot body! Haha. 
The girls typically look quite similar. I always wonder if surgeons here have various templates for chix to choose from. Usually the enhanced eyes, nose, boobs and even face shape are quite easy to spot. As for their height, similar to girls in HK. Surprisingly their skin tone is usually not as white as I would imagine. The girls you see on TV probably has an inch of foundation on so don’t be mistaken. I usually notice this when I check out their legs. One more thing, some girls would have relatively bigger boobs and I’d guess what you’re guessing now. I had one k girl with fake “sisters” and they’re actually surprisingly soft and nice. Regardless, this is a very subjective issue so it’s up to you to explore.
Rundown:
Guys here are not really into singing (or perhaps it’s just my friends). Plus, they don’t play the dice games we play in HK/China/Macau so for someone who doesn’t speak Korean, it’s actually quite boring. They like to sit and talk. Once we got into the room and after picking our partners, the girls would start preparing the snacks and drinks. This is quite different compared to the presence of waitresses in PRC. In essence, the girls have a dual role, partner and waitress. The drinking/talking would last around 45 minutes and then a waiter would come in and ask the girls to go out. That’s the time when they go and get ready. About 15 minutes later, they would come back and lead us to the rooms upstairs. This is very similar to the practice in Macau. I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking about the actual boning experience b/c it’s subjective but I must say the service attitude is outstanding! They’re so attentive. I.e. they treat you like a king. One girl even folded my underwear. About the room, it’s ok. Not super big. Clean and equipped with washroom, bed, TV. Standard stuff.
After spending about 45 mins or so, the girl would like you back to the room and then you will get a chance to sing. How? Well, they actually wheel in a portable karaoke machine w/ a set of big speakers. In addition, there is a guy there who plays live guitar. Pretty fun, eh? The KTV system is almost prehistoric. Remember the times when you had to use a book, flip over each page manually, pick a song, identify the song # and then input it into the system? This is it!!!! Worse because I can only sing Cantonese/Mandarin songs so I need to look for the songs myself. I noticed my friends would just tell the guitarist/DJ the name of a song and he’d be able to play it. In terms of selection, the Chinese songs are very old and limited. Another thing is you don’t get to see MVs on the TV. It only has notes and lyrics on the tiny monitor for you. Oh well… If you are an avid karaoke singer, you will surely be disappointed.
Finally, about the cost, it’s actually not as bad as I initially thought. Expect to cost around HK$3k per head. This includes almost all you can drink beer/whiskey, karaoke, companionship. This amount is pretty much standard for a place like HK and BJ. Not sure about Macau given all the misc charges they like to charge you for.
