Duran Duran ----- Rio

Rio是巴西城市里約熱內盧(Rio de Janeiro)之簡稱。

對足球迷來說，Rio是曼聯球星里奧費迪南(Rio Ferdinand)。

對手遊迷來說，Rio是Angry Birds Rio。

對動畫迷來說，Rio是”奇鸚嘉年華” 。

對AV迷來說，Rio是女優柚木天娜。

而對Duran Duran來說，Rio其實是指美國。

1982年推出的Rio是英國樂隊Duran Duran的同名專輯裏的第四張single，是他們其中一首早期大熱的作品。

Rio的歌詞裏所講的表面上是對一個名叫Rio的女孩的迷戀，其實內裏想表達的是他們對美國的鍾情，和希望征服這個龐大巿場的渴求。

當年很多西方音樂人、歌手、樂隊組合都視打進美國市場為終極目標。無論他們在祖家有多厲害、有多受歡迎、有多呼風喚雨，一日不能成功攻佔美國市場，他們都不會被視為真正成功。強如The Beatles都是因為歌曲能夠踏足美國國土才能真真正正成為巨星。當年二十出頭的Duran Duran成員就有此宏願。

細心看看歌詞便會發現玄機處處:

“From mountains in the North down to the Rio Grande” – Rio Grande是分隔美國和墨西哥的一條河。所以，歌詞中描述由北部的山脈至Rio Grande所指的地方正是美國。

“With a step to your left and a flick to the right. You catch that mirror way out west” – 英國和美國分別位於大西洋的東西岸。

以下幾句歌詞可以看到Duran Duran對美國的鍾愛程度:

“You know you’re something special and you look like you’re the best” – 你是最好的，你知道嗎?

“And when she shines she shows you all she can” – 你經常展現最好的一面給我們看到。

“I’ve seen you on the beach and I’ve seen you on TV” – 嚴重上腦，你無處不在。

結果，他們成功登陸美國。

和Spandau Ballet的True一樣，此曲的MV同樣由Russell Mulcahy執導。Russell Mulcahy曾執導多首Duran Duran的MV，包括Hungry Like the Wolf、Save a Prayer、Is There Something I Should Know? 、The Reflex等等。Rio MV的特色是色彩繽纷，把Duran Duran的鮮明形象充分地表現出來。此MV也展現出一種浮華的lifestyle: 俊男美女、陽光海灘、穿著整齊的Antony Price西裝、駕着帆船暢遊加勒比海…….。當年這種風格的MV對美國樂迷來說很有新鮮感，因此廣受歡迎，在電視中的播放次數非常高，同時也幫助這張single獲得不俗的銷量。

可能是因為靚仔的關係， Duran Duran的實力長期被低估，普遍人認為他們賣樣多過賣音樂。其實各成員都擁有不錯的音樂底子。不過，總會有懂得欣賞的人，尤其是John Taylor的bass guitar。他在Rio中密集而不平凡的bass line演奏非常精彩，獲得不少識貨之人的高度評價。Rio bass line 原來它已經成為很多bass guitar player的show quali對象。
