Medusa is the second studio album by Dutch dark wave band Clan of Xymox. It was released on 1 November 1986 by 4AD.
CLAN OF XYMOX came together in Nijmegan, Holland with vocalist and guitarist Ronny Moorings, Anke Wolbert on bass and vocals, and Pieter Nooten on synth duties.
The band’s debut ‘Subsequent Pleasures’ was mixed and recorded by Moorings at home, and released on his own label.
The band eventually came to the attention of 4AD Records who signed Clan of Xymox, a late addition to the label’s roster of weird, dark and beautiful acts. The first release was the single ‘A Day’ followed by their debut album.
Characterised by a spacious synth sound with strong baroque leanings and lush string arrangements, the band relied heavily on electronic experimentation.
"Our biggest motivation was finding the right combination between innovative new electronics and original guitar sounds," said Pieter Noone.
"We used the latest and newest electronic devices, like the first samplers. In this way we were able to experiment with homemade sounds."
As the 80s progressed, the band’s sound gradually turned from synth-heavy soundscapes to more melodic atmospheres and finally incorporating dance rhythms.
I'm shrowded in darkness
I crouch in wasted years
I linger, I can't get through
Dazzled between far and near
Like the Elegies relate to days beyond recall
I linger in many memories
And again I stumble through the back door
Seeing you, a misty shadow
I feel my repression
I can't go on
And again I am falling backwards
Tomorrow, I'll be here again
A silent mute of a black desire
Tomorrow, I will be here again
Tomorrow, I'll be here again
Be here again
Be here again
I am tired of tears and laughter
Or what may come hereafter
I'm weary of days and hours
Desires, dreams and powers
Although it makes me weep
It's you
I wanna keep
