Armagnac is the result of a single distillation, whereas Cognac is doubly-distilled; hence the smoother feel of Cognac.
When I was in my twenties, I preferred Armagnac, as it had more kicks and went better with cigars and cigarettes. Now that I am nearly sixty, I like my Cognac better.

Thanks for your insight. I hope l'll appreciate cognac when I'm getting old. Now, l prefer whisky.

I was too into whisky and that was when a bottle of 20 yo Lagavulin or a vintage Glenfiddich would cost a few hundred dollars only. Then I did a tour of Scotland and some whisky tasting in the late 1990s and learnt a bit more about the distillation and making of whisky. And I changed my mind.
First, natural whisky has no colour. The brown tinge you see is the result of adding caramel and through aging in wooden casks taking in wood tannin. Second, they actually add water to dilute it down to about 40 degree alcohol; cask strength whisky is between 60-70% alcohol (they also add water to cognac and armagnac). Every so often you can find cask strength whisky on the market but they are more for mixing drinks. Thirdly, a lot of the taste of whisky come from the cask and the water they use. That's why Islay whisky tastes so peaty as they use underground water that run through the peats in the Islay and how they stress they use old port cask or sherry cask; some even use old Lafite/Latour/Haut Brion cask. Also there really is no limit in quantities; they can distil as much as they want.
I still drink them, but I would not thousands on them anymore; in fact I am only drinking them as presents from friends.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
(1) The cask strength is too strong and diluted with water makes it more palatable to most consumers. Of course this can affect the flavour and drinking experience. As l'm still a beginner, l prefer whisky around 40s% ABV.
(2) Besides those limited editions, the prices of Scottish whisky are quite reasonable, between $200 and 400 per bottle, like Lagavulin 16, Macallan 12, Caol Ila 12. Of course, l prefer going to bar rather than buying a bottle because l can try more distillers.
