Legislator Chu Hoi-dick has flown to London to find out whether newly-elected Legislative Council president, Andrew Leung, has really given up his British citizenship in order to be eligible for the post.
According to the Basic Law, the council's president cannot hold foreign citizenship or have the right of abode in another country.
Chu said he has doubts about the documents submitted to the council by Leung over the renunciation of his citizenship.
He said he has written to the British Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, requesting a meeting with authorities who handled the matter.
Chu added the British government had been under pressure from Beijing to speed up Leung's application to give up his citizenship.
