Eastern Long Lions came up short against Newcastle Jets in exhibition game
Eastern Long Lions took on A-League side Newcastle Jets in Shenzhen on Wednesday afternoon for an exhibition game. Eastern Long Lions put up a brave fight but came up just short against the Jets, conceding late and dropping a 1:2 decision.
Newcastle Jets established early control in the game. But it was Wong Chin-hung who came close to opening the score with a screamer that was rejected by the crossbar and stayed out of the net. Newcastle Jets also hit the crossbar afterwards through a sublime free-kick, wasting a glorious chance to get in front. However, the Australian side managed to take advantage of a counter-attack and found the back of the net right before the half time whistle, picking up a one-goal lead.
Eastern Long Lions drew level early in the second half, when Cheng Siu-wai delivered a sweet cross to Miroslav Saric inside the box. The latter took care of the rest and smashed the ball home, putting Eastern Long Lions back in the game. The Hong Kong side created more chances later on but could not convert. Just when the game looked like it was going to end in a draw, an Eastern Long Lions player committed a foul inside his own box and led to a penalty being awarded. The Newcastle Jets player stepped up to the penalty spot and coolly converted the shot, putting his side in front.
Despite the loss, Eastern Long Lions head coach Chan Yuen-ting gave her troops high praise after the game. "We were short of players for this game but everyone gave it their best shot," said Chan. “The fringe players displayed great mindset on the pitch and their attitude was spot-on."
"Manuel Rodriguez had a decent game, as his positioning and football sense were there to be seen. I also want to give young Li Ka-chun some praise for entering the game in short notice to replace Diego Moreira in the first half. Li played a statement game and really proved himself in the match."
Eastern Long Lions starting line-up:
Liang Yuhao; Cheng Siu-wai, Josh Mitchell, Tsang Chi-hau, Wong Chin-hung; Michel Lugo, Diego Moreira, Miroslav Saric, Lee Hong-lim; Manuel Rodriguez, Giovane Da Silva |
