More than three-quarters of donations made after the massive earthquake in Sichuan in 2008 remain unaccounted for, according to a mainland news report.
The news website Caijing said that more than 65 billion yuan of donations have been made nationally in the six months following the quake.
But, eight years on, Caijing said that, based on information available to the public, it could only work out how 23 percent, or 15 billion yuan, have been used.
The government had promised, back then, to set up an open platform for the public to learn about the movement of the donations, but it never materialised.
Caijing said that the Sichuan provincial government had documented the movement of about half of the 20 billion yuan it received up to 2011, but no more details were available afterwards.
The Red Cross Society of China said in 2011 that it had disposed of about 3.8 billion yuan’s worth of donations, but no breakdown was provided.
Taobao – an online shopping platform – raised around 20 million yuan in a few days, but not a word was said about how it’s been used.
The report comes just months after the Central Government passed a new charity law that aims at increasing oversight on how donations are spent amid widespread public distrust in charitable organisations.
