Not content with BMW having all the niche-busting fun with its X6, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its all-new GLE Coupe.
Just like its German rival, Mercedes says it has "combined two classes of vehicle [coupe and SUV] to make a new model".
And, to answer what is likely your first question: yes, there will be an AMG model. The GLE 450 AMG employs a bi-turbo V6 petrol engine kicking out 270kW at 5500rpm and 520Nm from 1400rpm all the way through to 4000rpm. Splendid.
"The GLE 450 AMG Coupe is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performance-oriented models will follow in the near future. The new product line from Mercedes-AMG has allowed us to make true sports-car technology and the fascination of motorsports more accessible," said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The 3.0-litre GLE 450 AMG features the brand's Dynamic Select system, which modulates the chassis and suspension, steering and powertrain, as well as the engine sound, instruments and dynamic control of the driving lights.
The GLE 350 d 4MATIC model uses a turbo-diesel V6 to develop 190kW and 620Nm from 1600rpm to 2400rpm. The GLE 400 4MATIC petrol model, meanwhile, is fitted with a V6 bi-turbo engine rated at 245kW and 480Nm.
All models in the range also boast a new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission linked to 4Matic all-wheel drive. The GLE 350 d and GLE 400 models feature even torque distribution of 50:50 between the front and rear axles. In the sporty GLE 450 AMG, however, this ratio is modified to 40:60.
