It is really sad that the 911 is getting soft. Cayman is now the sharpest (and sometimes fastest) sports car from Porsche.

I think the current 991s are covering all the basics right, remember how fans were criticising that a Boxster is not a Porsche?

as I am sure I can happily live with a Macan; might want to live with a 991 4;  I'm not sure I want to drive a Cayman S black everyday...

You are correct in the sense that they have turned the 991 into a GT. But for old-timers like me, Cayman is now their best driver's car besides the GT cars.
Cayman and the GT cars can easily be used as everyday cars unless you need more than 2 seats.
