I believe the massacre did happen. I don't think the CCP wanted that to happen, but it was the only way to stop it from getting worst. IMHO, Chinese people were not ready for democracy at the time. They should not follow it blindly. (It does take time for democracy to develop and huge portion of middle class which China lack of in 1989.) Very likely why it happened was a lot of government owned business were closed. Unemployment and inflation played an important role of the riot. My friend owns a night club in Chinatown, US. She told me that one of the student leader hang out there often after he moved to US. (the minority one, hehe) It was doubtful that students wanted democracy for the goods of the citizens, or they wanted to get out of China for their own reasons. The fact was that China was ready to open to the world and willing to accept capitalism in addition to socialism. Such riot was not necessary if people realized things does not happen over night. This is only my humble opinion, no offend to anyone.

平反六四? Not gonna happen anytime soon. CCP won't allow that in the near future.
I thiink the students were used as "Red Guards" by the old politicians ...
I agree with you, even though I think there were deaths, not likely thousands , more or less like a few hundred. A lots of students who were not related to 6/4 took advantage of it, lol...Got a 6/4 special visa/green card to emigrant to the US.
