This article is worth reading and the conclusion made by Professor So is sound. In my opinion, HK will lose in the battle with Shanghai to be the biggest and most important financial centre of China. This is mainly because Central government will not trust HK and put all her eggs to HK. In the eyes of the central government, HK is greatly influenced by western countries like the US and UK; and it is commonly known that most financial sharks are "wall street" expert and Jewish. The stability of financial system is obviously an important element for a country to be stable, so the central government will not rely much in HK. I think the central government did have hope in HK in the past. But with the launch of the Shanghai free trade zone, this hope is not existed. So HK should position herself to be a regional financial centre like Boston and Chicago, HK will not and has no hope to be the New York of China. |
