I was lucky enough to have driven my friend's 180E [W201] (yes with the smallest, slowest 1.8l engine) for a few months while she was away. For its time (early 90's) the car was solidly built and nothing from Japan can match it for that size of car. No compromise was taken and although it does not have much gadgets inside but the driving experience was very good. People often say how slow it is but they don't know the accelerator pedal has a long travel and need to push it down half way for a normal start.
My mother-in-law still drive one that was built in 1992 and it still function well and is relatively easy to maintain.
I later own the W202 series C200 which is like the above car but refined further and it drove very well for 4 years before I sold it.
I now have the W204 series C class. Although it is also very nice to drive and has more modern refinement, you can certainly feel that the underlying quality has gone down a bit over the years. But then again, it is now more affordable.
All Merc. after mid 90s until recently were no longer praised as "over-engineered" anymore for business reason. It is kind of sad but real life in the business world, P&L comes first, German cannot be the exception. That's why I like W124, W126, R129 very much

W124 feels very similar to W201 in its design as they are from the same era. In its days it was streets ahead of any other cars of its days. Driving a 21 years old 180E (I have a chance once a year) you would still feel that it was well constructed. Don't think a 1990 Japanese car can feel the same.
However, the recent Japanese cars feels quite nice and the gap is closing.
