SCARBOROUGH FAIR "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme"
Frank Kidson
(15 November 1855 – 7 November 1926) was an English folksong collector and music scholar. - Wikipedia
SCARBOROUGH FAIR - 1889 version
Are you going to Wittingham Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Remember me to one who lives there,
For once she was a true lover of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Without a seam or needlework,
Then she shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell her to wash it in yonder well,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Where never spring water or rain ever fell,
And she shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell her to dry it on yonder thorn,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Which never bore blossom since Adam was born,
Then she shall be a true lover of mine.
Now he has asked me questions three,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
I hope he'll answer as many for me
Before he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to buy me an acre of land,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
Betwixt the salt water and the sea sand,
Then he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to plough it with a ram's horn,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
And sow it all over with one pepper corn,
And he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to sheer't with a sickle of leather,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme;
And bind it up with a peacock feather.
And he shall be a true lover of mine.
Tell him to thrash it on yonder wall,
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme,
And never let one corn of it fall,
Then he shall be a true lover of mine.
When he has done and finished his work.
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme:
Oh, tell him to come and he'll have his shirt,
And he shall be a true lover of mine.
Martin Carthy - Scarborough Fair - 1965
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Remember me to one who lives there,
For once she was a true love of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Without no seam nor needlework,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to find me an acre of land,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Between the salt water and the sea strand,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to plough it with a lamb's horn,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
And to sow it all o'er with one peppercorn,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
And to thrash it all out with a bunch of heather,
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Remember me to one who lives there,
For once she was a true love of mine.
SCARBOROUGH FAIR
Walter Pidgeon, Joan Bennett, George Sanders.
Cafe
與名為 L'Abbaye 的 Nightclub, 他倆合作錄製的唱片 "Encore From The Abbaye" 當中亦有 "Scarborough Fair",
1966年10月: Simon & Garfunkel 專輯 "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" 版本, 同樣以 Frank Kidson 的音樂與
Ewan MacColl/Peggy Seeger Songbook
Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 in Jazzy version
MARIANNE FAITHFULL - Lyric 1966
Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there
For she was once a true love of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Without a seam, or fine needlework
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to dry it on yonder thorn
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
That never bore fruit since Adam was born
And then she'll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Between the salt sea and the sea sand
Or never be a true love of mine.
Tell her to reap it with a sheep's horn
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
And sow it all over with one peppercorn
Or never be a true love of mine.
And when you have done and finished your work
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Then come to me for your cambric shirt
And then you'll be a true love of mine.
在 Simon & Garfunkel 之前, 1963年 Bob Dylan 又一次繼 "House of The Rising Sun" 之後的老習慣, 他在 Martin Carthy 的
The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration"
GIRL OF THE NORTH COUNTRY - Lyric Bob Dylan
If you're traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was the true love of mine.
If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she's a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin' winds.
Please see if her hair hangs long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast
Please see from me if her hair hangs long
That's the way I remember her best.
I'm a-wonderin' if she remember me at all
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night
In the brightness of my day.
So if you're travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.
thanks ching for another lesson in music history.
paul simon was wrong because he didn't acknowledge the original composer.
on the other hand the simon and garfunkel duet did make the song sound better.
