If you overfill, there is a overfill drain in the tank. I saw this man trying to fill his tank to the brim , but I saw liquid dripping down underneath his car as his tried to squeeze more fuel in. What an idiot.

Charcoal canister is in front of the car and gas tank is in the back, so do you really believe there will be so much excess gas that could escape to soak up the canister, I seriously doubt it.

Water in you gas tank usually comes from bad gas you got from the filling station.
It is almost next to impossible to build up sufficient condensation to casue your engine service light to come on unless you drive your car very infrequent.

Another reason not to fill up your tank to the top is because you don't want to bust your credit card limit.

Charcoal canister location is vehicle dependent. some are located in the front under the hood, this is true for most older cars that are not computer controlled like carburetor or OBD I cars, before 1996. Cars made after 1996, equipped with OBD II, and CAN vehicles in 2008, have the canisters located near the fuel tank or near the frame for large trucks or full size vans, although not true for all makes and models, but generally true for most vehicles. I do this everyday at work, it is my job to know where the emission control components are located in the vehicles

so true, the overfill drain is made for the expansion and contraction of fuel in changing weather, especially in the summer where it gets hot in the day and cold in the night. The auto manufacturers already took that into consideration because they know some idiots always fill it to the brim, so this is also a safety precaution and also to minimize repairs because they don't want the tanks to explode or crack under pressure and hot climate

another thing is that not the gas soaks the canister, it is the overfilling of the gasoline in the tank that gets "sucked" into the charcoal canister by overfilling, liquid gasoline can get into the canister, that is what soaks it
