The Nexus 10 is a tablet computer developed by Google and Samsung. It is the second tablet in the Google Nexus series, a line of consumer devices implementing the Android operating system and built by original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners. Following the success of the 7-inch Nexus 7—the first Google Nexus tablet—the Nexus 10 will be released with a 10.1-inch, 2560×1600 pixel display. Being fresh off the grill, expect the Nexus 10 to fire up competition with the iPad 4 and Surface Tablet. If you happen to be a user that will be purchasing a new slate and is torn between the three devices mentioned, let us take a look at their specifications.
In terms of screen size, the Surface is the largest at 10.6 inches compared to the Nexus (10 inches) and iPad 4 (9.7 inches). The Nexus leads for screen resolution and pixel density at 2,560 x 1,600 (300 ppi) compared to iPad’s 2,048 x 1,536 (264 ppi) and Surface 1,366 x 768 (148 ppi).
Google’s Nexus is also the lightest at 1.33 pounds (lbs) compared to 1.44 lbs (iPad 4) and 1.5 lbs (Surface). Talking about CPU, the Nexus 10 houses a dual-core A15 processor while the iPad 4 comes with dual-core 1.6 GHz A6x and the Surface has a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3. OS is also a determining factor for choosing with Jelly Bean present on the Nexus, iOS 6 on iPad 4 and Windows RT on Surface. If you’re into taking photos, the Nexus has a 5-MP rear and 1.9-MP front; iPad has 5-MP rear and VGA front; and Surface with two 720p at both front and rear. With respect to battery life, the iPad 4 edges them with 10 hours (compared to 9 for Nexus and 8 hours for Surface).
The Nexus retails for $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB). Apple’s pricing varies for WiFi and those with WiFi+LTE. WiFi variants are priced $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB) and $699 (64GB) while for those with the added LTE, prices are $629 (16 GB), $729 (32GB) and $829 (64 GB). Lastly, the Surface is priced at $499 (32GB), $599 (32GB and Touch Cover) and $699 (64GB and Touch Cover).
Overall, price can be the consideration but if user is into performance, we’d say the Nexus 10 would fit their needs.
