Lexus was often said the name meant Luxury EXport to USa.
Quite frankly the first LS400 was copying the S-class Mercedes of the time, and selling it for 60% of the price.
Although it seems nice when new, it does not age well over time.
I sat in an original LS400 driven by my friend last year. If I don't say you are riding a Lexus you could belief you are in a Japanese car. Leather seat worn out, dashboard with the fancy lighting failing... it felt like an old car.
On the other hand if you have a Mercedes of same age, well kept example, the Mercedes would still feel like new and with better paintwork outside.
The biggest problem of Lexus is that it lacks innovation.
The GS range has the nose of the E-Class, rear window copying BMW and trying to sell at similar price of an E-class or 5 series BMW. There is no way I would pick Lexus on that price.
I have a Toyota Kluger (or known as Highlander in other market) which is the same platform as the RX-330. My Toyota version is about 60% price of the Lexus but with same engine, leather seats etc... No chance I will pay Lexus price.
The current IS 250 has very poor back seat leg room in the class so again it did not get my money.
Often you will see Toyota's stalk and switches in the Lexus cars so you feel that the car is really a Toyota with a high price.
