1967年5月12日，英國藝術搖滾樂團 Procol Harum 發行生涯首支單曲 "A Whiter Shade Of Pale"，隔月拿下全英排行榜冠軍並持續六週，在大西洋對岸的美國 Billboard 排行榜則爬升至第五名，不僅成為當年度嬉皮革命 "愛之夏 (Summer Of Love)" 現象的國歌之一，同時也名列史上最成功的單曲之一，全球總計銷售超過1000萬張。

根據2009年一項統計指出，"A Whiter Shade Of Pale" 是英國過去75年間公開播送次數最多的一首歌，同時也出現過無數翻唱版本。已知已有超過1000個翻唱版本。
