On Jan 12, 1987, THE MISSION released the single WASTELAND. The track came a few months after the band’s debut album, God’s Own Medicine, which had already introduced listeners to the brooding atmosphere and anthemic guitar style Wayne, Craig, Mick, and Simon delivered under the new banner. “Wasteland” went on to peak at No. 11 on the UK singles chart and, in the same year, made an appearance in the American crime drama Miami Vice (the Series Three episode “Teresa,” aired on 13 February 1987), increasing the band’s profile well beyond the British gothic rock scene.
Soon after its release, “Wasteland” became one of The Mission’s best-known tracks. It provided a perfect showcase for Simon’s dramatic e-bow accents and Wayne’s occasional lyrical bombast. One of his opening lines, “I still believe in God, but God no longer believes in me,” has often been cited as capturing the group’s penchant for shadowy introspection. Even if the words lean more toward dramatic impressionism than meticulous poetic study, fans quickly embraced the single’s grand sense of theatre.
I still believe in God, but God no longer believes in me
There's a crystal view from my window
And I can see years to come
I live for the burn and the sting of pleasure
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun
I can tear down the walls, storm them barricades
Run to the place where the frightened crawl
Desire lurks beyond good and evil
So dance on the graves where the hammer falls
Over this land
All over this wasteland
Over this land
All over this wasteland
You can touch, but please keep your distance
You're innocent and pure and with no shame
The spirit is willing, and the flesh is graved
Your teasing your torment with the pleasure of pain
Over this land
All over this wasteland
Over this land
All over this wasteland
Heaven and Hell, I know them well
But I haven't yet made my choice
My feelings dead 'cause I'm shouting loud
And no one can hear my voice
Walking the tightwire, can't look down
Strung out high, above you all
Faithful wind blows through this land
Howls my name, Hell is my fall
Over this land
All over this wasteland
Over this land
All over this wasteland
