Marc Almond & Gene Pitney ----- Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart
On Jan 3, 1989, MARC ALMOND (FEAT. GENE PITNEY) released the single SOMETHING'S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART.
When Marc Almond recorded "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" for his 1988 album The Stars We Are, he couldn't have imagined the extraordinary success the song would soon attain. Written by the renowned songwriting duo Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway and released by Gene Pitney in 1967, "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" had already cemented itself as a timeless pop classic. Now, Almond's rendition alongside Pitney himself catapulted the song back into the public consciousness, capturing the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart in January 1989 and bringing Pitney roaring back into the limelight.
Almond first encountered Pitney's music during the latter's concert at Bow Town Hall in East London. Though Pitney had entered the "cold winter" of his long career as Almond puts it, he remained an consummate showman belting out his catalogue of hits for a crowd of loyal fans. Inspired by Pitney's vocal talent, Almond decided to cover "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" and even jokingly suggested to his label EMI that perhaps Pitney himself would consider contributing backing vocals. To everyone's surprise and delight, Pitney enthusiastically agreed to not just sing backup but record an entire duet part. The two singers entered the studio having never met, yet their vocals aligned perfectly as if they had been recording side by side for years. A match made in pop heaven.
The song resonates with listeners thanks to Almond and Pitney's shared passion and theatrical flair. Their contrasting voices, Almond's rich and sensual tenor against Pitney's soaring bravado, blend together sublimely. As critic Paul Morley wrote in his review, "Pitney writes and sings as if his whole life depended on it. Marc does the same."
The song's success was wide reaching, hitting number one across Europe much to Pitney's surprise and delight. After years struggling to match the fame of his early career, "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" thrust him directly back into the international limelight.
Music executives in America however refused to release the song there, fearing listeners would wrongly assume Pitney and the openly gay Almond were in a homosexual relationship. This cowardly decision cheated American audiences out of experiencing this pop gem yet did nothing to hamper its popularity everywhere else. Pitney himself could hardly contain his excitement about this new pinnacle, the song blasting across the Nevada desert while the iconic music video filmed. "I couldn't believe the result," he marvelled during promotion for the single.
Twenty two years after it last topped the UK charts, "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" once again captured the British public's hearts and ignited an extraordinary comeback for one of pop's greatest crooners.
Something's gotten hold of my heart
Keeping my soul and my senses apart
Something's gotten into my life
Cutting its way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown
In a world that was war
I once lived in a time
That was peace
With no trouble at all
But then you came my way
And a feeling I know
Shook my heart
And made me want you to stay
All of my nights
And all of my days
I wanna tell you now
Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
Something's invaded my night
Painting my sleep with a colour so bright
Changing the grey, changing the blue
Scarlet for me, scarlet for you
I've got to know if this is the real thing
I've got to know what's making my heart sing, oh yeah
A smile and I am lost for a lifetime
Each minute spent with you is the right time
Every hour (yeah) every day (yeah)
You touch me and my mind goes astray
And baby yeah, and baby yeah
Something's gotten hold of my hand
Dragging my soul to a beautiful land
Something's gotten into my life
Cutting its way through my dreams like a knife
Turning me up, turning me down
Making me smile, making me frown
In a world that was war
I once lived in a time
That was peace
With no trouble at all
But then you, you, you
Came my way
And a feeling I know
Shook my heart
And made me want you to stay
All of my nights
And all of my days
Something's gotten hold of my heart
Keeping my soul and my senses apart
Something's invaded my night
Painting my sleep with a colour so bright
Changing the grey, changing the blue
Scarlet for me, scarlet for you
