On October 10, 1980, JAPAN released the single GENTLEMEN TAKE POLAROIDS, the lead single from the album of the same name.
Japan ventured into bold new territory with the release of “Gentlemen Take Polaroids”, the avant-garde title track from their innovative fourth studio album. While Japan had developed a cult following with their glamorous, romantic twist on Roxy Music’s sophisticated art rock, “Gentlemen Take Polaroids” marked a stylistic leap forward that cemented their status as one of the most exciting and unpredictable bands of the era.
Elsewhere on the parent album, songs like “Nightporter” and “Taking Islands In Africa” continued this journey into Japan’s own inner musical world. Collaborations with Yellow Magic Orchestra pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto introduced Eastern textures and microtonal inflections, pointing towards the acclaimed sonic adventures of 1981’s Tin Drum. But it was “Gentlemen Take Polaroids” which signalled Japan’s radical new direction, subtly shifting from art pop towards avant-pop.
For a group who had struggled to shake off their glam rock roots, pioneering synth pop classic “Life In Tokyo” just a year before, this remarkable evolution demonstrated Japan’s restless creative spirit. Unafraid to leave their comfort zone, by following their instincts Japan created a timeless musical statement. Over four decades later, “Gentlemen Take Polaroids” stands as one of new wave’s most inventive and evocative singles.
Now there's a girl about town I'd like to know
I'd like to slip away with you
And if you said you love me how could I mind?
Is there another side to everything you do?
Take in the country air
You'll never win
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
Breathe life into me
Spin me round
And I'll just sit and wonder why
Just a foreign town with a foreign mind
Why is everything so cut and dried?
The taste of country air you'll never know
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
Take in the country, ah you'll never win
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love they fall in love
