在打造出美國史上最暢銷的首張專輯後，接下來該如何鋪排續作呢？這是 Guns N’ Roses 在1987年的處女作《Appetite for Destruction》取得巨大成功後被提出的問題。他們的回應相當奢華，也就是在1991年9月17日同一天發行了雙專輯《Use Your Illusion I》 和《Use Your Illusion II》。其中一張大王牌〈November Rain〉是一首長達9分鐘的無敵抒情曲，這首歌是 Axl Rose 從80年代就一直藏在袖子裡的珍寶。

〈November Rain〉概念源自 Del James 的短篇小說《Without You》，該短篇小說是名為《The Language of Fear》的合集之一，該書在絕版後於2008年重新發行，現在還增加主唱 Axl Rose 寫的新引文：「Del James 對他所寫的大多數情況都有個人化的理解，並且因為曾經歷過而熱愛陰溝。」

Axl Rose 知道〈November Rain〉很特別，並且決心等到合適的時候才讓它面世。早在 1988 年，他就向《滾石》（Rolling Stone）雜誌表明這首歌對他的意義，說：「如果錄製不正確，我就不幹了。」接受《Music Enthusiast》採訪時，前槍與玫瑰吉他手 Tracii Guns 證實 Axl Rose 多年來一直在創作這首歌，「當我們為 L.A. 繼1988年發行的同名 EP 和粉絲最喜歡的迷你專輯《G N’ R Lies》之後，槍與玫瑰在 1989年夏天真正開始著手製作《Appetite for Destruction》的續作。在芝加哥的創作期間特別富有成效，Izzy 寫了八首歌，Rose 和 Slash 分別帶來了整張專輯，所以樂團有35首自己喜歡的歌了，他們決心一鼓作氣地全部推出。
