11月11日不是消費狂歡節日，而是反思人類好戰導致生靈塗炭的和平紀念日 。

和平紀念日/ 停戰紀念日 （Armistice Day）訂於1918年一戰結束的11月11日，紀念史無前例般殘酷的世界大戰（Great War）的告終。

很不幸，21年後爆發了第二次世界大戰，這個紀念日亦逐漸演變成 Remembrance Day，拓闊了紀念的戰事及對象。



1923年5月24日，屹立中環近百年的 和平紀念碑 由時任港督 司徒拔 爵士揭幕。倫敦原版的紀念碑出自英國著名建築師魯欣斯爵士Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens 1919年的手筆，設計時間雖然僅有14天，但建築簡約而肅穆莊嚴。

截至2002年4月，全球共有291個複本紀念碑，大小和裝飾各有不同。而本港紀念碑的大小及設計，與倫敦原版幾近一致，除了年份刻字採用羅馬數目字或阿拉伯數目字。



戰後，紀念碑刻上「1939-1945」的二戰年份，提醒大家當年有一班為保衛香港抵抗日軍侵略而犧牲的本地軍民。1981年，紀念碑側面更刻上「英魂不朽 浩氣長存」8個中文字，可見港府肯定華人的戰時貢獻，亦見證中文地位提高。
