Dexy's Midnight Runners ----- Come On Eileen



Dexys Midnight Runners的Come on Eileen是我小時候很喜歡的一首歌。這首歌很特別，與同時期的其他歌曲很不同。加進愛爾蘭民謠風格，全曲由三個不同節奏和不同key的段落組成，從開始的慢板逐步加快至結尾，全用”真”樂器演奏 (包括小提琴、五弦琴、手風琴、saxophone等等)，沒有用synthesizers，在那個年代中實屬少見。



當年的我雖然對此曲聽得滾瓜爛熟，但對它仍然有以下幾個疑問 :

誰是”Eileen”? — Eileen其實就是我們身邊的那個青梅竹馬、由細玩到大的女孩。經過大家的共同成長後其中一方(或雙方)希望彼此關係可以跨進一步(或多步) 至另一層次。據說此曲是跟據真人真事改編，Eileen其實是主音Kevin Rowland的青梅竹馬好友，長大後Kevin希望能夠與Eileen發展進一步的關係，甚至是”超友誼關係”。看看以下幾句歌詞 :

“Aah, come on let’s
Take off everything” — 說得很明顯吧 !

MV中的Eileen由Máire Fahey飾演。Máire Fahey是Bananarama和The Shakespear’s Sister成員Siobhan Fahey的妹妹。

誰是”Johnnie Ray”? — 歌中首段題及的Johnnie Ray是美國50年代紅歌星，他的hit歌包括“Cry” (1951) 和 “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home” (1952)，當年廣受大眾歡迎，尤其是家庭主婦，相信主角的媽媽也是他的歌迷 :

“Poor old Johnnie Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
Moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried, sang along
Who would blame them?”

在Come on Eileen的MV裏Johnny Ray亦有以舊電影片段形式出現。

“Too-ra-loo-ra, too-ra-loo-rye, aye”出自何處? — 這是來自Bing Crosby的”An Irish Lullaby“中的幾句，也是他們和他們爸爸喜歡哼的一個tune。Come on Eileen這首歌有愛爾蘭民謠的原素，因此順理成章加進了這幾句。

這首歌當年很厲害，是1982年英國全年銷量冠軍single、並在Brit Awards奪得Best British Single、在83年4月登上美國Billboard Hot 100第一位、曾被音樂電視台VH1 選為”the 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders of all time”的第三位。在美國人眼中Dexys Midnight Runners是One-hit Wonder，因為他們在當地只有Come on Eileen一首hit歌，但其實他們在祖家英國於這首歌之前巳經有另一首冠軍歌”Geno”。

電影The Perks of Being a Wallflower (少年自讀日記)，很好看的一套電影。當看到中段赫然聽到Come on Eileen的前奏響起的時候，精神為之一振。知道電影用上了這首歌後，腦中不禁閃出一句「用得好!」。除了因為好聽外也很貼這電影的題。當Emma Watson說”they are playing good music”時，非常認同。而這首歌是出現在電影中很好看的一幕 : living room routine。
