Spandau Ballet ----- True

有沒有一些歌曲的前奏一響起，大家立即會”毛管戙”? 能有如此能力的，對我來說，’True’是其中一首。曲、詞、唱、編俱佳的True，絶對是timeless classic。

這首歌面世至今已超過三十年，其間多次出現在各雜錦碟、電影，也給人翻唱過很多次，可以稱得上是耳熟能詳，很多人隨便都能唱或哼出幾句。以下是一些關於這首歌的資料和背後的故事，不知大家又知道多少?

True收錄在1983年面世的同名專輯內，是英國樂隊Spandau Ballet的第三張專輯。True是這張大碟的第三張single (頭兩張是Lifeline和Communication)。
True的single在1983年4月在英國推出，曾登上流行榜冠軍達四個星期。同時在其他12個國家的流行榜也奪得冠軍位置，是Spandau Ballet在流行榜上最成功的一張single。
同年秋季登陸美國Billboard Hot 100，最高登上第四位，是他們在美國成績最好的一首歌。
True亦是Spandau Ballet最暢銷的一張single。但論網上下載次數，它只是第二位，第一位是同一張大碟裏的另一首歌’Gold’。

此曲由隊員Gary Kemp作曲。在一個訪問中他題及到他原意是想寫一首帶有偶像Al Green或Marvin Gaye風格的騷靈歌曲。而內容是關於如何寫一首情歌向喜歡的人表達心意，同時又不會令人覺得愚蠢突兀。
歌詞中的一句”Take your seaside arms and write the next line”是來自Valdimir Nabokov的小說Lolita。Lolita這本小說是關於一個男人與一個未成年少女的不倫之戀。而這本小說是Gary Kemp當年的女朋友Clare Grogan(樂隊Altered Image的女主音）送給他的。據說他們之間當時正發展一段不倫之戀。
歌中的Saxophone solo由隊員Steve Norman演奏，非常突出搶鏡。原來在True之前他只負責結他和敲擊樂部份，因為這次之成功和突出的表現，往後每首歌都會加進他的saxophone solo。
為紀念True面世三十週年，2013年4月重新推出’True’專輯的雙CD+DVD特別版，CD收錄了大碟中的八首歌+remix 版本，而DVD則收錄了他們在不同時期的現場表演片段。
此曲的MV由Russell Mulcahy執導。MV沒有故事內容，只看到各成員在表演這首歌。這是樂隊的刻意經營，因為他們覺得這首歌對不同人有不同的意思，因此不想影響他們的想法而破壞他們對這首歌的印象。拍攝時利用燈光經過水和玻璃反射在各人身上和背景上而營造出來的效果，非常配合歌曲本身的氣氛。

上面提到曾經有很多人翻唱過True這首歌，Paul Anka是其中之一。想不到Paul Anka伯伯也有此雅興，他的翻唱版收錄在2006年的Rock Swings專輯內。這個Jazz版本，好正!

主音Tony Hadley自Spandau Ballet在1990年拆夥後開始發展個人歌唱事業，他差不多每一次現場表演都不能避免地要演唱True (是否想起如葉麗儀唱上海灘一樣?) 。Tony Hadley在2011年與愛爾蘭女歌手Carol Havana灌錄了True的合唱版，是專為紀錄片”From The Ashes”而製作。

True除廣受樂迷愛戴外，也受到很多音樂人的垂青，從這首歌曾多次給其他音樂人sample可見一班，而每一次的效果都不錯。其中成績最好是1991年P.M. Dawn的”Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” ，此曲曾登上Billboard Hot 100笫一位。值得一提，Tony Hadley也在這首歌的MV尾段裏出現，給大家一個驚喜。
