Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ----- Enola Gay

69年前的今天 (1945年8月6日)上午8時15分(日本時間)，一架美國空軍B-29超級堡壘轟炸機在日本廣島投擲名為”Little Boy”的原子彈。事件中估計8萬平民罹難，廣島遭受到毀滅性破壞。這是原子彈的第二次引爆，並首次應用於軍事行動。而該架由上校Paul Tibbets駕駛的轟炸機是經特別改裝後可攜帶原子彈，它的名字叫”Enola Gay”。”Enola Gay”這個名字取自Paul Tibbets的母親Enola Gay Tibbets 。

三天後(8月9日) ，另一架美國空軍B-29超級堡壘轟炸機”Bockscar”把第二枚名為”Fat Man”的原子彈在長崎投下，市區也同樣地被嚴重破壞，成為全球第二個被原子彈轟炸的地方。此次轟炸迫使日本於6天後，在8月15日宣布向盟軍無條件投降，結束第二次世界大戰。

廣島與長崎兩次原子彈爆炸的總死亡人數超過十萬。而在這大災難中奇蹟生還的居民雖然能夠逃過一死，但由於他們暴露在強烈輻射中，引起許多後遺症：包括骨髓衰竭、惡性腫瘤、白血病等等。

原爆的破壞力之巨大和後遺症之影響深遠啓發了英國synthpop樂隊Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) 創作了一首反戰歌，並用上”Enola Gay”為這首歌的各字。1980年推出的”Enola Gay”收錄在OMD的第二張專輯”Organisation”內，是大碟內唯一推出的一張single，亦是他們的成名作。歌詞簡單但有力，處處可以感受到他們反戰和反使用大殺傷力武器的思想，並希望原子彈從來沒有掉下、戰爭從來沒有發生 :

‘Enola Gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday’ — Enola Gay，但願你從沒出征。

‘These games you play, they’re going to end in more tears someday’ — 這場戰爭遊戲將帶給人們眼淚與痛苦。

‘It’s 8:15 and that’s the time that it’s always been’ – 當它在8時15分投下時，世界一切立時停頓。

‘Enola Gay, is mother proud of little boy today’ – “Enola Gay” = 機師的母親，”Little Boy” = 原子彈。母親會否為自己兒子的行為感到驕傲?

‘This kiss you give, it’s never ever gonna fade away’ — 這次爆炸為人類帶來的傷害將會永遠不能磨滅。

當年推出這首歌時曾經發生一段小插曲。話說當時有些人對「廣島原爆」這件事的無知而誤以為這首歌是關於”Gay”的。某些電台覺得它可能會對小孩子有不良影響因而禁播此曲。雖然如此，此張single推出後大受歡迎，全球總銷量達五百萬張、在歐洲多國(包括英國、法國、意大利、西班牙、葡萄牙等等)的流行榜都得到好成績。

“Enola Gay”的其中一個成功因素是它擁有一個很獨特、很入耳的synthesizer hook，令人一聽難忘。
