Treasure is the third studio album by Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins. It was released on 1 November 1984 by 4AD.
From their earliest recordings, Cocteau Twins exerted a subtle, moon-like pull on the music scene. Their music was crystalline, precious, a great deal too precious for some – the ultimate 4AD band.
Titles like 'Frou-Frou Foxes In Midsummer Fires' conjured exotic imagery while their music sounded like an aural confection. All of this driven by a relentlessly ecstatic intensity and Liz Fraser's wordless yet deeply expressive vocal performances cathartic to the point of exorcism.
1984's TREASURE was their most beautiful yet oblique offering to date, a cleaner, more layered album than ‘Head Over Heels’ and one that was greeted ecstatically.
For Robin Guthrie, the praise was fair enough; for Liz it was more troublesome. She was uneasy about the elaborate compliments she was receiving and hated the idea that journalists, in particular, might be searching her lyrics for keys to her soul.
Her reaction was to begin making her words more obscure, writing in a kind of romantic Esperanto of her own devising. A certain amount of emotional concealment was practiced inside the band too.
"People started commenting on Liz’s words and she got really paranoid," recalled Guthrie in 2000.
"So she started trying to cover up what she was saying. If you write down the lyrics to Treasure, they’re all English, but she’d twist them so it sounded different. And then it got to the point where she started to make words up and was just picking them out of foreign dictionary.”
Get off the car
Kick his chain
Kick his pride, get him soaked, hit, run
Lift up your toes
In my mouth
And we can make love
And we can go
And we can go
And we can go
We're covered by the sacred fire
When you come to me, you come to broke
Get off the car
Kick his chain
Kick his pride, get him soaked, hit, run
Lift up your toes in my mouth
And we can make love
And we can go
And we can go
And we can go
And we can go
And we can go
We're covered by the sacred fire
When you come to me, you come to broke
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
Without a doubt
We're covered by the sacred fire
When you come to me, you come to me broke
Guilty girl, guilty boy
Get to make out, him chocked with mousse
Lift up your toes in my mouth
And we can make love
And we can go
Guilty girl, guilty boy
Get to make out, him chocked with mousse
Lift up your toes in my mouth
And we can make love
And we can go
