武漢爆發新型冠狀病毒疫情，中國當局釋出病毒基因組，根據基因分析，新型冠狀病毒或許源於蝙蝠或蛇，而有兩份研究都指出，蝙蝠或許在此次疫情扮演重要角色。

中國科學院期刊「中國科學生命科學」（Science China Life Sciences）周二發佈新型病毒株與其他病毒關係的觀察結果，發現武漢爆發的冠狀病毒與蝙蝠身上一種病毒株密切相關。中國多個機構的研究人員在報告中寫道：「推論蝙蝠是武漢冠狀病毒的原生宿主既合邏輯又省事，但蝙蝠傳染給人的傳染過程上，或許也存在著中間宿主。」

「中國科學生命科學」的研究並未揣測哪種動物是罪魁禍首，但周三「醫學病毒」（Medical Virology）期刊有研究認為，蛇可能就是中間宿主。該研究說：「為搜尋可能的潛在病毒源，我們進行了廣泛的定序分析與比對。分析結果顯示，蛇是最可能的野生動物傳染點。」

不過，研究人員不敢妄下定論，表示「仍須以動物模型進行實驗研究，更進一步驗證」。兩份研究都未解釋到這種病毒是如何從動物傳染給人類。
