This month in 1988, THE HOUSE OF LOVE released the single CHRISTINE and their eponymous debut album, ‘THE HOUSE OF LOVE’ (May 1988).
It is perhaps surprising to learn that early 90s indie favourite SHINE ON by HOUSE OF LOVE was first released way back in 1987.
The glittering and shimmering menace that was ‘Shine On’ was an early example of Guy Chadwick’s ability to construct soaring melody around disillusionment and despair.
This dense sound was the post-punk basslines of Chris Groothuizen, sculpted psych guitars from Terry Bickers, German rhythm guitarist/co-singer Andrea Heukamp and drummer Pete Evans.
Signing to Creation Records, The House of Love released their debut single "Shine On" in May 1987.
“Between the Smiths/Echo and the Bunnymen and the Britpop resurgence, this London quartet briefly caught England's late-'80s imagination on the strength of stunning early singles, leader Guy Chadwick's forceful, smart persona, lead guitarist Terry Bickers' array of powerful, echoed sounds and the sustained promise of importance and (or) greatness,” wrote Trouser Press in 2000.
“But the realities of building substantial popularity on the Creation label into full-fledged pop stardom proved disastrous, and nearly ended its career after one album.”
“Originally a quintet with three guitarists, House of Love caught England's attention with its third single, the insidious Jesus & Mary Chain-meets-the-Left Banke three-chord pop of "Christine," later the leadoff track of the quartet's (typically) untitled debut album (the cover pictures two band members)."
In ‘88, the band began recording sessions for their debut album, 10 tracks that took just over a week to lay down.
The album was preceded by the release of the single CHRISTINE which scored the band an Indie Chart No 1. Later in May, the debut album was released without a formal title but has since been referred to as ‘The House of Love’.
Christine, still walking at me
Still talking at me
Christine, such a sense of loss
And the baby cried
Christine, Christine
And the whole world dragged us down
And the whole world turned aside
Christine, you're in deep, pristine
With a god-like glow
Christine, Christine,
Heart and the glory and me
Chaos and the big sea
Christine, still walking at me
Still talking at me
Christine, Christine, Christine
And the whole world dragged us down
Not a sonnet not a sound
And the whole world turned aside
The cruelest hand just turned an eye
Christine
