The late David Bowie version of “America” written by Paul Simon was performed at the Concert for New York City on October 20, 2001. All proceeds from the benefit concert went to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which helped those in need affected by The World Trade Center tragedy. Madison Square Garden concert was held in response to the 9/11 attacks. Bowie sang a beautiful, haunting cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “America” with Mark Plati on guitar and Gail Ann Dorsey on bass.
"Hi friends, my fellow New Yorkers. I'd particularly like to say hello to the folks from my local [FDNY] ladder," he said in between songs as the crowd applauded. "You know where you are. It's an absolute privilege to play for you tonight."
