Several groups staged a protest outside the central government’s Liaison Office on Saturday, to demand Beijing release detained rights lawyers and activists.
Authorities began a large-scale crackdown a year ago. Nearly two dozen lawyers and activists remain in detention, and face charges including inciting subversion of state power.
Mabel Au, director of Amnesty International Hong Kong, said she wants to tell the international community that China does not have true rule of law, as many trials are fixed. Au said the situation is getting worse
Meanwhile, overseas bar associations and lawyers groups issued an open letter to President Xi Jinping criticising the detentions.
The letter calls on Xi to release all lawyers and others it said were unlawfully detained, and ensure that the detainees can pick the lawyers who represent them and are provided medical treatment and visitation rights.
The letter was signed by more than a dozen groups including the Hong Kong-based China Human Rights Lawyers Concern Group, the Amsterdam Bar Association, the Australian branch of the International Association of People's Lawyers and the International Commission of Jurists.
