LO1: Formulate a project that will provide a solution to an identified problem.
1.1 project identification
1.2 research methods
1.3 feasibility study
1.4 brief and specification
1.1 Project identification:
What is project identification? Before we start to plan or design or construct a project, we must to understand what projects we should be building. That goes back to the very beginning what are our needs.
For example, the HK Shanghai Hotel Group back in the 1900s, the group wants to build a hotel in Shanghai and they decide to build a 6 story hotel in Shanghai. It was in the H shape. The H is for the beginning letter for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotel Group (HSH).
After the war, the HSH group move to HK and they started to build the Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong. In order to remember their hotel in Shanghai, they copy the same outlook of the hotel in Shanghai and hence the HK Peninsula hotel is in the same H shape.
However, any owner or developer can build some other properties. It can be a residential building like the Galaxia Tower, or an office like the Cheung Kong Center. Or it can be a club house or an exhibition center. The needs can be the owner's goals or expectation. Or it can be a business objective. Like constructing a race Course or a holiday resort.
1.2 Research methods:
Research methods are the means, ways or procedures, in some way , for executing the research or the subject in mind where we want to fond the solutions to the problems. For example, finding the fastest methods for building a bridge. How to find out the methods is the research method.
There are different ways for these research. In the broader sense, we can either use quantitative research method. This is the method which use statistics or some quantitive calculations method to find out the truth or opinions for problem or finding a solution.
