how are they different besides size and displacement? 2-stroke is an engine design, and all 2-strokes will give you that high revving engine sound characteristic.
Also, one thing that a lot of people get confused with is the sound of exhaust note and the sound of engine note. Often times when I watch car reviews, the reviewers would rev the engine when the car was park or in neutral (one of the many silly ways to destroy a transmission, by the way) and say "oh, just love that engine note" while focusing their cameras on the exhaust pipes. What actually they're referring to was the exhaust note, which really tells nothing about how great those engine could be.
Speaking of great engine sound, the most memorable that I have heard (personal opinion and experience, of course) would be the one on an Alfa Romeo 164 Quadrifoglio . When it comes to exciting exhaust notes, I would have to say cars like the Dodge Vipers and Chevy Corvettes, or even Ford Mustangs (v8) and Chevy Camaro (v8).

Well, engines with the same design can still sound very differently, as u said Alfa 164 QV's V6 sounds better.
Can't agree u more regarding the confusion by many people of engine and exhaust note. IMO, with good engine note, exhaust can help u fine tune the overall experience by twisting it a bit. Otherwise exhaust note on its own won't be able to turn so so to exciting
