"SUMMERTIME"
是音樂劇 "Porgy and Bess" 劇中的個唱歌曲之一, 該劇是發生在 South Carolina 的真實故事, 講述一個生活於貧民窟的黑人跛丐 Porgy, 他想幫助一個與毒販共同生活的女子Bess 脫離窘境。
故事出自美國小說家 DuBose Heyward 1925年的小說 "Porgy", 1927年改編成話劇演出。而早於話劇改編前, Heyward 的妻子 Dorothy 曾與作曲家 George Gershwin 商談, 將它以音樂劇型式配樂, 及後要到1933生年才開始動筆, 歌詞則由 DuBose Heyward 編寫, 音樂撰曲是 George Gershwin 的手筆, 至1935年才完成以 "Porgy and Bess" 這音樂劇目面世。

PORGY AND BESS - Movie

"Summertime" 這歌曲在劇情中的演譯, 最深入大眾內心的就是女主角以自怨自艾, 輕撫懷中嬰兒時唱出之情景。直至今天, 此劇在種族歧視方面仍有很大爭議, 所以並未被大眾廣泛接受, 但此曲則極受推崇, 被公認為20世紀初期, 美國東南部的黑人爵士樂歌曲代表作, 至今被重新編錄、翻唱不同版本達三萬多個。

但有傳部份曲調創作, 啟發自一首烏克蘭搖籃曲 "Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon" (A Dream Passes By The Windows), 這搖籃曲是 Oleksander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus 於1929年在紐約市演出時的歌曲之一。

1936年由 Billie Holiday 的演譯, 首次登上美國流行音樂榜第12位。1966年 Billy Stewart 的版本登上 Billboard Hot 100 第12位。最突破的是1968年由 Janis Joplin 與迷幻樂隊 Big Brother & The Holding Company 的演譯被公認為最受歡迎的流行版本之一, 她亦以此曲演出於 "Woodstock 1969" 。
